No locals headed to ASU, WCU; Mars Hill lands 7 | The Asheville Citizen-Times | citizen-times.com

CULLOWHEE — Western Carolina signed a dozen football players to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday.

But perhaps as interesting as who's on the list is who isn't: It's the first time in more than a decade that the Catamounts didn't land any players from WNC on national signing day, a rarity coach Dennis Wagner attributed to circumstances outside the norm.

Still, the lack of area players taken by regional Southern Conference schools took WNC high school coaches by surprise.

None of Appalachian State's 19 signees hailed from the mountains, and Wofford was the SoCon's only school to pick up an area recruit: West Henderson's Kevin Thomas.

“Personally, I think we've got some great football players in the area,” said Erwin coach Mike Sexton, whose quarterback — Garrett Brown — was unsigned despite setting the Buncombe County record for single-season passing in the fall (3,429 yards).
